Front suspension |
Independent strut type suspension with coil springs and telescopic hydraulic damper units. Single lower transverse links with fore and aft location by leading radius rods. Coil springs seat on noise insulating washers. Rubber bushed pivots and special wear resistant ball joint swivels. Anti-roll bar. |
|
Rear suspension |
Semi-trailing arm independent suspension mounted on rubber insulated steel sub-frame. Coil springs seat on noise insulating washers |
Steering |
Power assisted rack and pinion type. |
|
Steering wheel |
3 spoke alloy with padded rim and centre boss. The Mk 1 steering wheel was 16 inches (406 mm) in diameter while the Mk2 was reduced to 14½ inches (368 mm). Some late cars had the slots in the spokes filled with black rubber. The steering column is adjustable by approximately 4 inches (102mm) axially and 2 inches (51mm) vertically and incorporates an anti-theft locking device. |
Road wheels |
Standard wheel size was 14 inches. Up to the end of the 1975 model year steel disc type wheels with 5J flat hump safety ledge rims, fitted with stainless steel trims, were standard on non-Federal cars. The spaces between the spokes on trims for Mk 1 wheels were painted black, on Mk 2 wheels they were left as polished metal. Five-spoke alloy wheels were standard on Federal cars from commission number LE 20272, prior to which 48-spoke centre-lock wire wheels had been standard fitment. The wire wheels had been an option on non-Federal cars up to mid-1975. From commission number LD 40001, built in October 1975, the five-spoke alloy wheels became standard. Reproduction alloy wheels have the valve between two spokes while on the originals it was in the centre of a spoke. Wheel nuts used with the alloy wheels were also made of alloy with a concave head: up to the end of the 1975 model year they were finished in silver but for 1976 and 1977 the finish became satin black. Reproduction wheel nuts have a domed head. |
